'Media must react positively to issues'

The national workshop on ‘Dimensions of Media and Impact of Youth’ was organised by  the Department of Sociology at St Teresa’s College here on Wednesday.

At the inaugural address, Mayor Tony Chammany said that the media, being the Fourth Estate, should act as the custodian of public interest and watch over the actions of the government. He emphasised on the necessity of the media in playing a proactive role to highlight issues of the marginalised.

“The media should positively react to the issues of the society” Hibi Eden MLA said in his felicitation speech.

Saj Mathews, former Chief Economic Correspondent of PTI, Chennai, spoke on the changing dimensions of media. The role of the media in moulding new generations was elaborated upon by Ignatius Gonsalvez, Chief Editor of Jeevanadham and Director of New Age. Quoting from the book ‘The Other Parent’ by James Steyer, he reminded how the media has transformed the persons into products and how they are determining our children’s reality.

Godwin J, freelance Ad- photographer and guest faculty at Salesian Institute of Graphic Arts, Chennai, handled the session on ‘influence of visual media on youth’.

There was also a panel discussion with P C Vishnunath MLA, film director Amal Neerad and Beena Rani, moderated by veteran journalist Leela Menon.College principal Sr Teresa presided over the function.
