Ernakulam region of Milma plans projects worth Rs 100 crore

The Ernakulam region of the Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) which covers Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kottayam and Idukki districts has formulated developmental projects worth `100 crore. At present, projects worth `75 cr are at various stages of implementation in four districts, said Milma Ernakulam Region Chairman P A Balan at a press conference here on Tuesday.  He said that some projects are now under the consideration of the State Government.

“We have already submitted a proposal to construct an Aseptic Packaging Plant at Thripunithura Dairy compound worth Rs 24 crore.  The plant will enable to pack and supply Ultra High Temperature (UHT)-treated milk with a shelf life of three months, across the state,” he said.  UHT is the food sterilisation technique of heating the product for a very short period of around 1-2 seconds, at a temperature exceeding 135 degree Celsius, which is the temperature required to kill the spores in milk.

Elaborating on other projects of Milma, Balan said that the federation will give a total of 1,500 calves to 300 women belonging to Scheduled Castes at a ratio of five to one,  by December.  “The project costs Rs 5.3 crore and is being implemented with the financial aid of the Scheduled Caste Development Department.

The storage and processing capacity of the Kattappana Dairy will be increased by one lakh litre per day. The total cost for this is expected to be Rs 21.25 crore including a Central government grant of Rs 15.88 crore. Development projects worth Rs 9.67 crore will be implemented at Edappally Product Dairy by including it in the National Mission for Protein Supplement scheme,” he added.

He said that development of Thrissur and Thripunithura Dairies worth Rs15.83 crore is also on.

“The project worth Rs 9.53 crore to increase the processing capacity of Kottayam Dairy to 70,000 litre  is going on now. Implementing the Central project ‘Clean Milk Production’ in  Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kottayam and Idukki districts to install bulk milk cooler worth `9.5 crore is also at an advanced stage,” he said..
