Aiming to boost awareness on breast cancer, the Joy Alukkas Group in association with the Cochin Cancer Society has launched ‘Think Pink’ project in Kochi on Wednesday. The project will be spearheaded by oncologist Dr V P Gangadharan.

Dr Gangadharan said breast cancer cases was increasing at an alarming rate in the state. “But, it can be completely cured if it is identified in initial stage. The primary hitch that prevents a patient from getting treatment at the right time is misconceptions. Afraid of social stigmas, many women are reluctant to take treatment. Hence they keep on delaying taking the treatment which naturally results in grave consequences. Awareness can bring about a vast change in this attitude not only of the patient but society too,” he said. Dr Gangadharan said that many people are still not aware of the fact that breast conservation is possible. “If the anomaly is detected at an early stage, you need to remove only those part which is inflicted with cancer cells,” he said.

Under the project, training classes will be organised in colleges. Pamphlets and brochures will also be distributed among the college students. Deputy Mayor B Bhadra and Joy Alukkas, chairman and MD, Joy Alukkas Group spoke.
