Ponnurunni RoB to be Opened Today

The Ponnurunni RoB, which was mooted to ease passage along the Vyttila- Thammanam route, will be thrown open to the public on Saturday.

The Ponnurunni RoB, which was mooted to ease passage along the Vyttila- Thammanam route, will be thrown open to the public on Saturday. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the function at 3 pm. PWD Minister V K Ibrahim Kunju will preside over the function. The work on the 642-metre long RoB, constructed by the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation in association with the Kochi Corporation, had begun on May 2011. Delay in receiving Railways’ nod had affected the pace of the work. The bridge was expected to be commissioned in 2013. But, the works kicked off smoothly once the sanctions were given, officials said. The 8.5-metre-wide bridge with a total of 18 spans has been constructed at a cost of ` 17.27 cr. The total cost of the project has been approximated at `20 crore. The Railways will provide half of the funding. The Kochi Corporation expects to receive `8 cr through the JNNURM scheme also. The total land acquired for the bridge was 164.05 cents. Of this, the corporation acquired 30.69 cents and handed over it to RBDCK. Ministers Aryadan Mohammed, K Babu, Manjallamkuzhi Ali, Mayor Tony Chammany, MLAs Benny Behanan, Dominic Presentation, Hibi Eden and Ludy Louis, P Rajeeve MP, Charles Dias MP, GCDA chairman N Venugopal, Collector P I Sheikh Pareeth, PWD secretary T O Sooraj and Chief Administrative Officer of Southern Railway, Kerala, Dani Thomas will be present.
