The CBI on Monday arrested an executive engineer of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) after he was caught red-handed accepting bribe from a contractor at his office here. According to CBI officials, the arrested person was M Rajavelu, 50, native of Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu.
They said Rajavelu had asked `8000 bribe from a contractor for clearing bills of completed works.
Even after several requests were made by the contractor, Rajavelu refused to clear the bills until the bribe money was paid. On this, the contractor approached the CBI. CBI officials gave him currency notes treated with phenolphthalein powder to be handed over to Rajavelu.
As told, the contractor and gave the notes to Rajavelu.
“Soon we entered his cabin and took him into custody. His finger prints were found from the notes treated with phenolphthalein powder. A case has been registered,” a CBI official said.
