The data for one of the most ambitious social welfare scheme of the government - ‘Pension for all’ has started pouring in from many panchayats. Among them the Cheranalloor panchayat stands out. To reach out to every nook and cranny of the panchayat and disburse pension benefits to eligible applicants, the panchayat has started holding five-day pension adalats. The first adalat was held on Tuesday.

Moreover, it’s like a single window system. Everything required and officials concerned to process the applications are assembled under one roof while people are summoned to the respective panchayat offices in other panchayats.

“Summoning them to panchayat offices has its own disadvantages. Unlike in the earlier times, the list of the  pensioners is growing bigger. There are chances of missing out eligible people. Hence we decided to conduct adalats on five days,” said Jayaraj, assistant secretary, Cheranalloor panchayat.

There was good response on the first day.

An hour after the adalat commenced, more than 200 people were assembled at the SNDP Hall at South Chittoor.

Many government officials such as the village extension officer, doctor, ICDS supervisor, agricultural officer and panchayats officials were present.

“To process pensions for various categories, you need certificates from different departments to which you have applied for pension. The applicants would have to frequent many offices to obtain the same. Besides, the state government has brought in certain changes in fixing the criteria for pensions.

A family can apply for pension if the annual income does not exceed ` 3 lakh. Previously, it was not so and a financially-backward family  which had a government employee was not eligible for pension. But that has changed now.

The family can apply provided the government employed earns a meagre income. The changes have led to the increase in the size of the list. Hence, by bringing the officials concerned, we are easing the applicants’ difficulties,” he said.

The adalat will be held from 10 am till 5 pm. But the panchayat officials said that they are ready to extend the time if any applicant turns up after 5 pm. In Cheranellur Panchayat, there are 17 wards.”

We are conducting adalats for three wards which lies almost near. The Tuesday’s adalat were for area that includes Kurankotta island, Chittur panchayat, from Idayakkunnam area till Medicity hospital.
