The team of Perambra Higher Secondary School has won the top prize at the 27th Southern India Science Fair held in Chennai, for their model ‘Water and Energy Wastage Preventing System.’ The model was presented by Class X students Niranjana S and Arun Krishna M.

Niranjana had achieved the honour at last year’s fair also which was held at Haveri, Karnataka, for the model ‘Total Railway Protection System.’

The idea evolved out of the students’ intention to develop a model to prevent leakage of pipes. “Leakage in short diameter pipelines often remains unnoticed and the loss of water continues for months, perhaps years. But leakages in pipes having large diameters very often result in huge pipe bursts. In both cases, precious drinking water and the energy utilised for pumping go waste. Moreover, pipeline burst damages roads, drainage, power and telegraph cables besides affecting road transport system,” said Niranjana.

Their model is of a device which detects and mitigates leakages at the initial stage itself, both in domestic and main pipelines, thereby minimising the loss of water and consequent energy loss.

The system mainly consists of three major electronic circuits, electromechanical arrangements and different sensors. The first circuit is employed for detecting and controlling pipe leakages and bursts. The second one locates the spot of leakage in a broken underground pipe with the help of special sensors.

The third circuit is linked to many electromechanical and moving parts. It monitors and controls water flow in the neighbouring pipes and acts as a protector of the entire water distribution system.

Niranjana had won the first prize in the Kerala State Science Fair held at Thrissur in 2009 for her model of low-cost fluid dispensing system. She received the Inspire Award in 2010 from the Department of Science and Technology and bagged the first prize in the State Science Fair held at Kozhikode in 2012. The girl is the daughter of Sudheer Babu, a teacher of the Perambra HSS, and Simna, non-vocational teacher, Koothali VHSS.

Arun is the son of K T Ajith Kumar, lab assistant, Perambra HSS, and Priya. Niranjana’s father Sudheer Babu was their teacher guide.
