Aiming at converting all barren agricultural fields into cultivable lands, Muvattupuzha MLA Joseph Vazhakkan, along with all local bodies in the constituency, has come up with ‘Barren Free Muvattupuzha’ project.

The project to be implemented in a phased manner seeks to make nearly 120-hectare unused paddy fields a fertile land with an immediate effect.  Joseph Vazhakkan MLA said the project, first of its kind in the state, was proposed as part of a master plan prepared by the Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA) in connection with state government’s Vision 2030 programme focusing a comprehensive development of the Muvattupuzha constituency.

Apart from the state agricultural department, the State Kudumbashree Mission, Horticorp and other government agencies department will take part the project.

“The project aims to make all unused agricultural lands cultivable. In the  initial stage, we will focus on paddy fields. Later, the project will be extended to all other crops. Over 120 hectares of land located across the 12 grama panchayats has been identified for the project,” said the MLA. All abandoned agricultural fields will be taken for lease for a fixed period and will be given to farmers for cultivation. All issues faced by the farmers will be addressed. Adequate machines and labourer force will be provided. There is also a plan to form a labourers army under the Kudumbashree mission for supplying adequate work force,” the MLA added.

The project is expected to be launched by this month and an amount of `30  lakh has also been  allocated by 12 local bodies for this fiscal. More fund will be raised from the Agricultural Department and other agencies if  needed,” the MLA added. A joint meet  attended by the representatives of all local bodies in the constituency was held the other day and a special committee under the chairmanship of the MLA was also formed. All panchayats will soon an form a  committee headed by panchayat president,” said the MLA.  It is expected that the project will be launched this fiscal itself.
