The national awards constituted by the Coconut Development Board (CDB) will be distributed at New Delhi on February 11. The award recognises and promotes excellence in coconut cultivation, innovative methods in coconut farming, product development, product improvement, quality improvement and product diversification and marketing.
Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar will give away the awards to sixteen winners under various categories. Union Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs K V Thomas will deliver the special address on the occasion.
Union Ministers Charan Das Mahant and Tariq Anwar, A A Jinnah MP, Agriculture Secretary Ashish Bahuguna will speak.
A seminar on new initiatives of the Board will also be held prior to the national award distribution function. T K Jose, chairman of the Board, will deliver the keynote address at the seminar. Awareness classes on the same theme will be given by technical experts of the Board. An interactive session with farmers and stakeholders will also be held on the occasion.
The recipients under different categories include the best coconut farmer-national, south and west region, east and northeast region under the traditional and non-traditional coconut growing states. The award for the best national coconut farmer is instituted in the name of N I Devassykutty, founder and chairman of the Board. The best research worker, master craftsman in coconut based handicrafts, best exporter of coconut products, best extension worker and best cooperative society/NGO in the field of coconut development, best palm climber, best coconut producer society (CPS) and best coconut processing unit managed by women are the other categories.
