After clearing the hurdles on the side of the state government in  setting up a cancer centre in Kochi, the volunteers of Justice V R Krishna  Iyer Campaign for Cancer Centre will meet national leaders soon. Though the  majority of the demands raised by them have been approved by the state government, the project is yet to garner any substantial financial assistance from the Union Government.

“We have requested Congress president Sonia Gandhi for an appointment when she comes to Kerala next week. We hope to point out the issue of inadequate funds then,” said Dr Sanil Kumar, a volunteer of the campaign.

Justice V R Krishna Iyer has sent a fax message to Sonia Gandhi and Defence Minister A K Antony in this regard.

Dr Sanil Kumar said a meeting with national leaders is a part of a well-defined campaign. “The state government has done every bit to help us. But, we are short of money. Besides, this project could not be included in this year’s Union Budget too. Hence, the sole purpose of the meeting will be to make them grant a substantial amount for the project,” he said.

On Sunday, when Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi visited Justice V R Krishna Iyer at his residence, the latter submitted a memorandum in this regard.

Modi had assured every help and said his government would do everything to realise the cancer centre project. Earlier, the volunteers had also met Defence Minister A K Antony who offered every possible help. They have also shot a fax message to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to intervene so as to source financial aid from the Centre.

The main demands of the Krishna Iyer movement include appointment of a competent special officer and HSCC (India) Ltd, a PSU, to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project. Though the state government kept mum on the project for a very long time, they later consented to both these demands.

Health Minister V S Sivakumar assured that a meeting will be convened at the earliest with the agency authorities and the special officer will be appointed for the project to chalk out a clear plan for the cancer centre at the earliest. But, the mega project could garner only `10 crore which won’t suffice.

Dr Sanil Kumar said that the Justice V R Krishna Iyer Campaign for Cancer Centre would meet every leaders irrespective of their political affiliations.
