The council meeting of Kochi Corporation on Monday witnessed some dramatic scenes as a belligerent opposition came to a direct clash with Mayor Tony Chammany.

Halfway into the council meeting, when opposition councillors started raising their voice, the Mayor too reacted provocatively.

The issue began when the opposition pointed out that the agenda related to Pachalam ROB was not discussed in the meeting of the Town Planning Committee prior to the council meeting, which should have been done according to statutory provisions.

The opposition created mayhem in the House, reasoning that the Mayor was not giving a proper reply to their objection. As they moved into the Well of the House and started criticising the ruling council, the Mayor reacted in a rough manner.

Abuses were exchanged till senior councillors intervened to solve the dispute.

The opposition councillors then returned to their seats agreeing to continue the council discussion. The Mayor later justified his behaviour, claiming that he was threatened by some of the councillors.
