‘Noisy Mama’ has come a long way since German drummer and composer Carola Grey founded the jazz-rock band in New York in 1991. It has evolved through the decades, and now specialises in Indian Jazz-Rock. The band, which has Indian artists, plays funk and rock, inspired by traditional ragas and western melody.

Because of this enticing mix, ‘Noisy Mama’s’ music is well received, both in Europe as well as India. So, it was no surprise when the band won the Munich Music Award and brought out a much acclaimed first album ‘Road to Goa’.

‘Noisy Mama’ is being brought to Kochi by India Elements and will perform at the JT Pac on Sunday, February 16, at 7 p.m.

Munich-born  Carola Grey is regarded as one of the best drummers in the world. She started out as a pianist, and spent six years in New York working with numerous artists. Soon after, she started her own band and began touring all over the globe. To have creative control, she founded her own record label: ‘Noisy Mama Productions’. Her CDs have made it to the Top Ten of the US. Gavin Jazz charts. Carola has won numerous awards for her outstanding performances.

The other band members include lead guitarist Antony John, who has worked with A R Rahman, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Sivamani and the Kenyan Jo Joo. He formed the band, `Roots,’ which rocked Chennai and other Indian cities in the late 1980’s.

Bass guitarist Naveen Kumar is an accomplished session artist, based in Chennai. The London Trinity College 8 grader has performed for the Abu Dhabi Big Band as part of the UAE Philharmonic Orchestra (2007-09). He has also played with the British Orchestra as well as the  Middle Eastern Ensemble.

Pianist Biju Poulose recreates symphonies from a range of Indian classical and percussion instruments. Biju has worked in more than 1000 films and has won the award for the best background score composer in 2000 for his work in Mazha. Completing the star-studded cast is playback singer Palghat Sreeram who projects the beauty of Indian jazz-rock through his versatile voice. Though he is known for his vocals, Sreeram is an accomplished flautist and keyboard player.
