The DRI, which is investigating the case of gold seizure at Karipur airport on Monday, has got information that the consignments belonged to a gold smuggler identified as Haneefa, native of Panthakkal, Mahi. The two arrested persons, who were carrying 2 kg of gold each, had confessed to the DRI that the supplier of the gold had told them that Customs officials would assist them in leaving the airport.

According to DRI officials, Parambath Suraj of Kannur and Chakkiyot Muhammad Ansas of Panoor got the gold from a person identified as Naseer in Dubai.

The consignment belonged to Haneefa, a native of Panthalla, Mahi, who is involved in gold-smuggling business.

After getting to know that Suraj and Ansas were returning to Kerala, Naseer approached them and promised to give them `35,000 and the flight tickets. He had told them that Customs officials in the airport would assist them in getting out of the airport. On Monday, Naseer met the duo at Dubai airport and handed over the gold. They were told to carry 2 kg of gold each, so that they could get bail if caught by enforcement agencies.  In the washroom at Dubai airport, they concealed the gold in their socks. They were told that the gold should be handed over to a person wearing an orange shirt and carrying an orange bag outside the airport.DRI officials said they have initiated the move to identify and nab Haneefa and Naseer.“These persons are suspected to be involved in small seizures. The statement of the arrested men would help them in tracing down other persons involved in the racket. First, we have to identify Haneefa and Naseer, and locate them. The man, who was present at the airport to receive the gold, also has to traced,” DRI officials said.Suraj and Ansas were arrested in the Green channel of the airport while they were trying to sneak out along with the gold.

Both of them had landed on Air India Express flight IX344 around 2 am. The DRI officials said the total gold seized from them had market value of `1.25 crore. Both of them were produced before the Ernakulam Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate and remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.
