Diversifying its activities, FACT Engineering Works (FEW), the   fabrication division of Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT), is foraying into maritime sector by making   barges to be used by the parent organisation. The first barge to be fabricated by FEW will be used by FACT for transporting Liquefied Ammonia to different divisions of FACT.

With the new barge being inducted into service, the quantity of ammonia transported will become double. FACT is currently transporting 192 tonnes of Ammonia using a hired barge.

“FEW has already commenced fabrication of six bullet tanks for the barge at  its workshop at Palluruthy. Each bullet has the capacity to carry 32 tonnes of liquid ammonia. One barge is fitted with six bullet tanks which together can carry 192 tonnes of Ammonia per trip. This barge can be used for transporting ammonia from Udyogamandal to Ambalamedu or from Willingdon Island to Udyogamandal/Ambalamedu,” FACT authorities said.

“The fabrication of the new barge, which will be fitted with the newly-fabricated bullets will begin soon at FEW, Palluruthy,” they added. Liquefied ammonia gas is an important raw material used by FACT for producing NPK fertiliser at their plant at Ambalamugal. FACT has to transport around 500 tonnes of ammonia gas from its Petrochemical Division at Udyogamandal to Amabalamugal Division and sometimes from the storage facility at the Cochin Port. After a gap of nine years, in 2013, FACT had resumed transportation of ammonia gas through waterways by awarding contract to Irumbanam-based Backwater Navigation Company.

Though the hired barge can carry 192 tonnes of liquid ammonia per trip, the full requirement of ammonia cannot be met by this barge alone.

Since there are stringent restrictions on transportation by, we thought of owning a barge,” FACT authorities said.
