The state’s first radiotherapy unit at Ernakulam General Hospital will soon boast of having linear accelerators (LINAC). Health Minister V S Sivakumar on Friday said `7 crore has been sanctioned for it.
LINAC therapy, constituting an electron linear accelerator as its core component, is the most modern method in treating cancer. The minister said this while inaugurating the second phase of dialysis centre at the general hospital on Friday. Sivakumar said the government has sanctioned a super specialty block at the hospital.
“Its construction will begin before March 31. `5 crore from the National Rural Health Mission and `2 crore from the assets fund of Ludy Louis MLA have been allotted for its construction. The super specialty block will start functioning by offering services in neurology, neurosurgery and cardiology departments. The block will be constructed on the premises where the RMO quarters is now located,” he said.
From March 1, all the facilities and schemes in other medical colleges will be available at Cochin Medical College also. Distribution of generic medicines comes first in the list, he said. The newly-inaugurated dialysis centre has 10 units and poor patients can largely benefit from the facility.
