The CBI has filed a charge sheet before the CBI Special Court against the Superintendent and Inspector of the Central Excise Wing for accepting bribe.

The CBI chargesheeted Antony George, 44, Inspector of Central Excise, Service Tax Division, Kochi; and Dinakaran C K, 56, Superintendent, Preventive Wing, Arrears Cell, Central Excise, Kochi.

As per the charge sheet, Antony was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh from the proprietor of an advertising agency in February 2013.

Dinakaran, Antony and other officials of the Service Tax Wing, Central Excise, visited the office of the advertising agency in January 2013 and seized some documents.

Later, Antony informed the proprietor to appear at the Service Tax office.

When the proprietor went to the office, Antony told him to pay `30 lakh as penalty for not paying service tax.

When he was informed that all the pending service tax had been paid, Antony took him to Dinakaran’s cabin.  In the presence of Dinakaran, Antony said even if all the pending service tax amount had been cleared, a penalty of `3.75 lakh must be paid. However the penalty would be waived off if he paid a bribe of `1.5 lakh, Antony said. He also called the proprietor over the phone on several occasions for the bribe.

Following this, the owner of the advertising firm lodged a complaint with the CBI.

As directed by CBI officials, he paid a bribe of `1.5 lakh in  chemically-treated currency notes.

As soon as Antony accepted the bribe, CBI officials caught him red-handed and registered a case against both the officials.

The case was registered under 120(B) IPC, Section 7 and 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
