The Kerala High Court has directed  the Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner to provide police protection for the  construction work of the aviation turbine fuel storage facility, which is being set up by the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) at Valiyathura near Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The High  Court issued  the directive on a petition submitted by the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd seeking police protection to carry out the construction activities.

The court granted the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd to continue with the installation of machinery.

However, it directed the oil company that the facility should be commissioned only after submitting an affidavit before the court.

A people’s action council, which is staging an agitation against the construction of the storage facility, had submitted the petition before the High Court alleging that the construction of the storage facility is against public interest.

The petition in this regard was filed by action council leader George Fernandez.
