Much to the relief of farmers reeling under acute shortage of labourers for agricultural activities, the Piravom Panchayat is all set launch labourers’ army - ‘Thozhil Senas’- aiming to provide service of  skilled persons for farming activities.

The panchayat has launched an eight-member army on an experimental basis for paddy fields and plans to extend the service for all cropping.

Sabu K Jacob, president, Piravom Panchayat said the main issue faced by the  farmers, especially paddy farmers, in the district was unavailability of labourers.

“Most of the farmers fear that they won’t be able to reap the crop in time owing to shortage of labourers. Considering the issue, we have mooted the project in association with Krishi Bhavans to provide skilled and adequate labourers force. The newly launched Sena will provide their service in paddy fields,” he said.

As per the plan, members of the army will get special training for agricultural activities such as harvesting, coconut climbing and pest controlling. A special committee was formed under the chairmanship of the panchayat president to set the wages and working time of the army members. As per the decision of the committee, the members will get `350 a day and uniforms.

There is also a plan to extend the service of the Sena to the farmers in other panchayats, said the panchayath president. Sabu K Jacob inaugurated the Thozhil Sena other day at Nakukkara paddy field.
