It’s looks like the politics of maths has gone haywire. The estimated amount does not tally with the amount spent in 2013-14. The civic body pegged the income of last year at a whooping Rs 492.45 crore and expenditure at Rs 459.62 crore. That would mean the Corporation hit a jackpot last year because the revenue and expenditure for 2013-14 in the last year’s budget was put at Rs 332.34 crore and Rs 295.75 crore respectively. But the reality is different.

Mayor Tony Chammany had admitted that the Corporation was in deep financial crisis struggling even to provide funds for its contract works. Even though the local body claims to have increased its revenue it is insufficient to fill the gap in numbers. The question that looms large is how did the local body earn and spend way ahead of last budget’s projection. The anomaly does not stop there. The budget expects a total income of Rs 857.75 crore and an expenditure of Rs 826.01 crore for 2014-15. Interestingly, this figure is quite close to the estimate of the civic body for 2013-14: the last budget estimated an income of Rs 877.97 crore and an expenditure of Rs 849.86 crore.
