Not long ago owning a bike (bicycle) was a trend only among school students, in a year’s time the bike fever has gripped health freaks and cycle lovers as well. Bikes are red hot on trend-o-meter in the cities of the state. We are talking about high quality imported cycles for hardcore cycle lovers. The number of bike aficionados is growing every day. A group has even formed a biking club called Malabar Cycle Riders Club at Kozhikode.

One of the most sought-after imported bike brands is ‘Firefox.’ The only dealer of Firefox bikes in Kozhikode is Cosmos Sport. “The bike trend has changed in a year. We get orders for both road and mountain bikes. Firefox Kompac AL is high in demand in the city,” says Rozik Umar, MD, Cosmos Sports. Cosmos has bikes ranging from `5,000 to `24,000 and above.

The Firefox Kompac AL is designed for mountain biking and off-road biking. The bike is also the best option for dirt trail and unpaved roads as well. This unisex bike comes under the speciality category. The bike stands out from the rest with an alloy folding frame.

Besides Firefox, which is an entry-level brand, Montra and La Sovereign are also commonly favoured among starters.

Bergamont, with its limited variants, starting from Rs 35,000, is preferred by hardcore bikers.

Sanjay B Asher, owner of Krishna Cycle Store, also known as the Gear Junction at Mattanchery, Kochi, has a growing number of customers from Kozhikode. “There are four bikers who use the bikes of Fuji, a US company. These are value-for-money-bikes. Its a win-win situation for the supplier and user when it comes to Fuji bikes. Its price starts from `23,000,”says Sanjay. Fuji, Bergamont and Scott from Switzerland, Focus from Germany and Merida, a Taiwan-based company, are second-level bikes, which are one step higher than the entry-level bikes. The high-end bikes are preferred by those who have in-depth knowledge about biking.

“Most of the time our customers who are into hardcore biking do all the research for us before buying them. Besides, we have to suggest bikes based on the height, weight and road condition of the biker. Since Malabar region is hilly, we usually suggest mountain bikes (MTB). But then there are clients who specify that they only do city rides. For these riders we suggest Hybrid bikes. They are weightless and since they are a combination of MTB and road bikes they are ideal for Malabar region,” explains Sanjay.
