US Food and Drug Administration(USFDA) Commissioner Dr Margaret A Hamburg visited the Accelerated Freeze Drying Co Ltd of Amalgam Group, a leading seafood processing Company at Willingdon Island here the other day.
Her visit highlights the importance of the ongoing bi-lateral collaboration on food and drug programmes and to emphasise the importance of quality in product development. Abraham J Tharakan, chairman of company, received the Commissioner. She met the company executives and visited the factory.
She will be in the country till Tuesday. Earlier, she had met the government and the regulatory officials in New Delhi.
At present, India is the second largest provider of finished drug products and the eighth largest exporter of food products, including spices and seafood to the US. Last year, India emerged as the largest exporter of shrimp to United States, surpassing Thailand. India’s exports are close to 100,000 tonnes, valued at over a billion dollars.
