The Hurt and Homicide Wing of the Crime Branch, which arrested a person for murdering a teenager in Changanassery in 1995 has found that the same person had also murdered a close friend in connection with the same incident. The CB has registered a separate case in this regard.
According to K G Simon, SP, Crime Branch, Harikumar alias Unni, 41, of Elamuriyil house, Manjadikkara, Vazhapilly in Changanassery, who had murdered 13-year-old Mahadevan in 1995, also killed Sali, one of his close friends, in 1996. Sali was the person who helped Harikumar in disposing the body of Mahadevan. Harikumar had allegedly killed the teenager while trying to snatch his 10 gm gold chain.
The boy had been reported missing and the search for him had dragged on for years. The Crime Branch had finally cracked the case and Harikumar was eventually arrested for the murder of Mahadevan the other day. “Sali had been frequently threatening Harikumar that he will spill the beans about the murder of Mahadevan, and demanded money from Harikumar. Fearing this, Harikumar paid money first. But on one occasion, Sali blackmailed him for `1.5 lakh. It was after this that Harikumar and his brotherin- law Kannan conspired to murder Sali. They invited Sali for having liquor and mixed poison in the liquor,” K G Simon said.
After ensuring that Sali was dead, they threw the body into the same pond where they had disposed of Mahadevan’s body. Since the pond was in an isolated place and was full of weeds, it was difficult to spot the bodies. Harikumar confessed everything to the Crime Branch officials during interrogation. “We sent a report about the incident to our headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram and an FIR has been registered there,” officials said.
Kannan, the brother-inlaw of Harikumar, had died some years ago and now, the Crime Branch is investigating about his death too.
