The Central Labour Commissioner has issued a show-cause notice to Era Constructions that is entrusted with the Kochi metro work in Vyttila, for allegedly failing to pay the salary to its employees for the past two months.
The Central Labour Commissioner intervened in the issue as he had received a complaint by the employees. The sub-contractors and the employees had threatened to stage a mass strike in protest against the non-payment of the salary. The Central Labour Commissioner said that legal action would be initiated against the company if it fails to pay the employees within one week.
“I personally went to the spot and spoke to the employees who said that they were yet to receive two months’ salary from November to December. When I brought this to the notice of the authorities at Era, they promised that the payment would be made soon. If there is no positive response in a week, legal action will be initiated against the company. Also, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will also be asked to pay the workers if the company fails to do so,” the Central Labour Commissioner said.
DMRC officials said that they were willing to pay the employees. “ Currently, we are of the information that the salary has been paid. However, if the employees still have complaints, we are willing to pay them,” he said.
The managing director of the Era Constructions, Sreenivasa Rao, was not available for comments.
Meanwhile, the DMRC has decided to entrust the Kochi metro rail work to Soma Constructions in the Ernakulam-South Vyttila stretch as the Era Infra Engineering was found incapable of executing the work owing to financial crunch. DMRC officials said that the work will immediately commence once they receive the official orders from Delhi.
