Former Judge of the Kerala High Court Justice T L Viswanatha Iyer,82, died here on Sunday. He was also the founder of the leading law firm Iyer and Iyer Advocates.
Iyer was ailing for sometime and the death occurred at a private hospital in the city. The funeral was held at the Ravipuram crematorium. He is survived by wife R Vijayalakshmi, sons T V Lakshmanan (Scientist, USA) and Ramanarayanan (Businessman, Kochi), daughter T V Sulochana (Engineer USA) and daughter-in-law Debera and son-in-law Vasudevan (IT USA). Viswanatha Iyer is the son of prominent lawyer at Kozhikode Bar the late T L Lakshmana Iyer.
He took his LLB from Madras Law College in 1955 and later got enrolled as a lawyer. He was junior to K V Surya Narayana Iyer who became the first Advocate General of Kerala. Viswanatha Iyer had started practice in the High Court in 1957 after a short stint at the Calicut court. He was appointed as the judge of the High Court on September 1986 and retired from service in November 1994. Thereafter he practised in SC,being designated as a senior advocate.
Iyer as a Judge, tried and disposed of a large number of divorce cases involving fraud under the Indian Divorce Act. He had passed remarkable verdicts in cases related to Constitutional law, taxation and Income Tax Act. Sitting with Justice Krishnamurthy, he upheld the validity of Section 57A and 57B of the Abkari Act prescribing death penalty for mixing deleterious chemicals like ethyl alcohol in arrack resulting in death of a large number of people. Iyer was appointed as the enquiry officer to look into allegations of sexual harassment of women and children in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry. People from all walks of life flocked to pay their last respects to Iyer. The mortal remains, kept at a private hospital, were taken to his home, at 12 noon for the public to pay homage.
