7 Acquitted in Custodial Death Case

Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate(CJM) has acquitted seven Prison Department officials accused in Shibu custodial death case in Kottayam sub-jail in 2000. The investigation was carried out by the CBI.

Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate(CJM) has acquitted seven Prison Department officials accused in Shibu custodial death case in Kottayam sub-jail in 2000. The investigation was carried out by the CBI.

CJM  V Hari Nair, exonerated M Muralidharan, T V Sreenivasan, N Gopinathan, V K Vidyadharan, P Manoharan, B Suresh, Thomas M Thomas, V Suresh and  Kuruvila Eapen.  V Suresh and Kuruvila Eapen had died in the course of the investigation period,  and charges against them were dropped.  “There is no evidence to show that the accused denied medical attention to the deceased on time. The prosecution could not prove that injuries on the deceased person’s body were caused by the accused. So, no criminal liabilities can be charged upon the accused without any definitive  evidence,”  CJM observed.
