The procedures to set up an oceanarium at Kochi are nearing completion, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. He was speaking after inaugurating the International Aqua show 2014 at Kochi on Friday.
“ The environmental studies regarding the project is in its final phase. The construction will begin once the report is submitted,” he said. Chandy said that the oceanarium will be set up in the PPP model.
“ Globally, the ornamental fish business has grown immensely. But as far as India is concerned, it has a minimal share of `100 crore. But, Kerala is a state endowed with huge opportunities for this business,” he said.
Sri Lankan Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne, who was also present on the occasion, pointed out that his nation holds three percent share of the global ornamental fish business. “We are ready to join hands with India to flourish this business,” he said. Excise Minister K Babu presided over the function. Union Minister K V Thomas inaugurated the exhibition pavilion. K P Dhanapalan MP, Charles Dias MP, and actor Dileep also took part.
The aquashow will conclude on Tuesday. An international seminar titled ‘ Ornamental Kerala 2014’ will also be held.
