The Olinbichira, an abandoned and heavily silted pond in Aikaranad panchayat, near Kolenchery, will soon get a facelift as the district panchayat has mooted a renovation proposal for the pond as part of ‘Lotus and Lilly’ project.

The district panchayat has also accorded an amount of `30 lakh for the same and is planning to execute the project in collaboration with the Aikaranad grama panchayat. According to the panchayat authorities, a detailed project report(DPR)will be prepared soon.

The construction work will be commence once the DPR is approved, said panchayat vice-president Bineesh Pulyattel.

He added that the pond will be desilted first. Plans to increase the depth and width of pond are also on the cards. As per the plan, a garden will be set up near the pond as part of beautification process and also a walkway and other entertainment facilities. A compound wall will be built around it.

The work is expected to commence by next month and completed within two months, Bineesh said.

After completing the restoration work, the pond, spread across nearly 50 cents, is expected to hold enough water to solve the potable water scarcity in nearby areas, he said.
