Squad to Nail Illegal BPL Card Holders

A special squad has been set up to identify persons who illegaly possess BPL cards.

KOCHI: A special squad has been set up to identify persons who illegaly possess BPL cards. The squad that will function under the taluk and city rationing officers will frequent each and every house to nab those who are not eligible for the card yet own it.

Though instructions to return them has been issued many times in this regard, the officials still suspect anomalies in this. The District Supply Officer had issued a directive to illegal BPL card holders to report at the respective taluk or city rationing offices in person, return the cards and convert it into APL cards.

If not, strict measures will be initiated. The defaulters would also have to pay the subsidy amount they got while purchasing items with the BPL cards. According to the instructions issued recently,  government officials, teachers, employees in the public sector undertakings, those who possess four wheelers, land more than one acres of land, house sprawled over more than 1000 sq.feet are exempted from the list of BPL cards.

District supply officer said that the public could give information regarding the defaulters through squads or in Taluk offices. They can also contact in the below mentioned numbers - City rationing office Ernakulam - 2390809, City rationing office, Kochi - 2222002,
