Meeting on Arthritis Held

KOCHI: Those who are suffering from gum diseases are more prone to Rhumatic Arthritis, said Dr D Padmanabha Shenoy, HOD, Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology Department at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi.

Dr Shenoy was delivering the keynote address at a function organised by the Kerala Arthritis and Rheumatism Society, in connection with World Arthritis day observance, here on Sunday. He said that patients suffering from swelling in joints should avoid prolonged use of painkillers.

“Such conditions should be cured through a treatment procedure that lasts for three-six months,” he said.

“In people who suffer from gum diseases, gems and toxic substances in the mouth enter the veins and accumulate in the joints. This increases the gravity of arthritis, and necessitates prolonged treatment,” said Dr S Roopesh, professor, Pushpagiri Dental College.
