Myriad themes ranging from picturesque landscape of the state to portraits of legendary leader Mahatma Gandhi were the subjects seen in the painting exhibition ‘Nirakazhcha’. The paintings done by 11 budding artists from Thrissur concluded on Tuesday at Durbar Hall Art Gallery.

The 32 paintings on display consisted of works in water colour, oil and acrylic. Students from Class VIII to XII, studying in various schools in Thrissur, Chalakudy, Irinjalakuda and Kodungallur took part in the expo. “Through this exhibition we aim to hone the creative skills of the students who many of the times put these passion of theirs in the back-burner,” said Kamal T K, co-ordinator of the exhibition.

One of the water colour piece done by young artist Christo showcases Jesus Christ preaching the parables of life to Mary Magdalene. The artist with his soft and subtle brush strokes has depicted the scene in yellows and pastels in the backdrop of brown and black while in another painting Jesus is seen consoling a child, another instance taken from the holy Bible. The other artists who took part in the expo include Saurav, Jomon, Vishnu, Abin Paul, Joel Jason, Nandu Balagopal, Devika Devdas, Adityan, Ajil M L and Jishnu. “Through our exhibition we also want the students to learn the act of kindness and as part of it, whatever profit that we have earned will be handed-over to Janaseva Sisubhavan,” said Kamal.

The fifth edition of ‘Nirakazcha’, is coming for the first time to Kochi, previous ones were conducted at Thrissur. Asked about the reason for opting Kochi for the latest edition, Kamal, teacher with Vimala Central School, Irinjalakuda, said that the idea behind selection was all about exposure. “Artists from various walks of life visit Kochi and seeing their works and talking to these artists will furthermore encourage the children to improve their art,” he added.

Mural paintings will be the highlight of the next edition of ‘Nirakazhcha’, which will be conducted in Thrissur, next year. “To prepare the children for the expo next year, we will be giving training to the students on Saturdays and Sundays,” said Kamal.
