KOCHI:In a significant move, the Corporation council meet held here on Tuesday decided to cancel the permit issued for setting up mobile phone towers and laying of 4G cables in the city.

Mayor Tony Chammany announced the decision after the Opposition lashed out at the ruling front for granting permission to install towers without the approval of the Town Planning Standing committee and the council.

“I have given the direction to issue stop memos to all the towers which were constructed without the approval of the Town Planning Standing Committee and the council,” said Chammany.

The corporation also decided to impose a fine on Reliance if they are found to have dug the road for laying 4G cables on some stretches without permission. “We will forfeit the deposit amount to the corporation account in case of violation of rules. A site inspection would be conducted by our officials and then only the amount will be finalised,” Mayor said.

Compared to other corporations, the Kochi corporation had collected the highest deposits from the company. However, Chammany failed to give a reply to Opposition leader K J Jacob regarding the list of roads where digging was permitted.

The Opposition also said that there were  irregularities in the cleaning works of the canals. “The corporation should not provide money to the contractors who had undertaken the pre-monsoon cleaning. They had only removed the weeds and nothing has been done to remove the sludge. The Perandoor Canal and Changadam Thodu are still filled with weeds. Disbursal of the amount due to the contractors should be withheld,” said Opposition Councillor Anilkumar.
