KOCHI:The Kerala High Court has issued an interim injunction restraining the State Government, Kochi Corporation and Greater Cochin Development Authority from permitting any further conversion of residential plots for commercial purpose in the Giri Nagar Housing Colony, for one month. The Court issued the order on a petition filed by residents of the Giri Nagar Housing Colony against granting permission for setting up commercial facilities in the residential area. Justice K Vinod Chandran issued the interim order on petitions filed by Kurian Abraham and 18 others, who own residential buildings in the colony.

Counsel for the petitioners Anil Sivaraman submitted that the Giri Nagar Housing Colony was the first planned housing colony in Kerala, envisaged as a dedicated residential complex on lands assigned for residential purpose only.

“The commercial activities have been causing traffic congestion on the service roads, due to parking. Conversion of the place into a commercial area leads to noise and air pollution, and residents are losing peace of mind,” stated petitioners.
