KOCHI: Medical science is not only a medium that offers pain relief, but also a huge income generator, said Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu here on Sunday.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Arthritis and Rheumatism Centre for Excellence at Sree Sudheendra Medical Mission here on Sunday. The Minister, who launched the free joint replacement programme for 90 patients, expressed hope that the cost of knee replacement surgeries could be reduced if the implants used in the surgery were manufactured in India.

He said steps should be taken to bring together religious leaders to spearhead the cleanliness campaign launched at the national level.

“Religion is a very strong force. I think we should bring together all the religions, and come up with a campaign to keep the railway stations clean,” he said, adding that he was looking forward to more initiatives in Kerala. The minister also assured that the Central Government would give the State due attention.

On the occasion, K V Thomas MP lauded the efforts by the hospital and said, “the dedicated service of the hospital would help reduce the cost of knee replacement surgery in the coming years.”

Former MP P Rajeev thanked the Minister for providing the DEMU and MEMU train services. He also lauded the hospital for providing affordable medical service to the public. Hospital MD Dr Junaid Rehman, councillor Sudha Dileep Kumar and IMA president Sunny P Orathel also spoke.
