Shrimp Culturing to Begin at KUFOS

KOCHI: Fisheries Minister K Babu said that  vannamei shrimp (Whiteleg shrimp) culturing will begin at the Fisheries  Station under Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (KUFOS), in February. The culturing  will begin on an experimental basis, the minister said after laying the foundation stone for the entry gate for the University on Monday. The entry gate will have traditional Kerala style design. Denying allegations that nothing is being done for inland aquiculture in Kerala, the minister said that Malsyasamrudhi Project has helped to increase fishery resources in the inland water bodies.

KUFOS Vice Chancellor B Madhusoodana Kurup presided over the meeting. Aiming to encourage entrepreneurship among students, incubation centres will be started at the university in association with various companies.  “Open massive online courses will begin from next year onwards. An Industrial Advisory Board will also be set up to facilitate employment opportunity for students,” the VC added.

The redesigned website of the university was launched by Maradu municipality chairman T K Devarajan.  Kumbalam panchayat president M H Sathyan, KUFOS governing council member S Shyama, KUFOS dean Sajan George and registrar Victor George spoke.
