New Bio-pesticide from Cow Urine

KOCHI:At a time when news of urine therapy for infections affecting vegetables are doing the rounds, the Ernakaulam district panchayat has come up with a bio-pesticide made of cow urine.

“Named ‘Explode’, the bio-pesticide contains extracts from Mexican Lilac (sheemakkonna), and is very effective on vegetables” said district panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappilly.

According to agricultural officer Aju John, the bio-pesticide is capable of preventing bacterial, viral and fungal infections. The leaves of the plants could easily absorb the pesticide as cow’s urine contains 2.6 per cent nitrogen.  “This pesticide would be more effective if two spoonful of either bird’s eye chili (kanthari) or garlic is added to it,” said Aju, who is also senior superintendent at the Aluva farm of the district Panchayat.”
