New Waste Disposal Plan for Hotels

KOCHI:  In a move to bring the much needed money in to its kitty the Kochi Corporation and a measure to make the waste collection mechanism of the city more effective, the authorities concerned had decided to collect user charges from hotels and restaurants for collection of waste.

Kochi Corporation council has already approved the proposal mooted by the Health Standing Committee. As per the plan, hotels and restaurants will have to pay `3 for removing one kilogram of food waste and `5 for removing plastic and chicken waste.

According to the Corporation officials, the total waste generated by the hotels and restaurants in the city limit everyday is roughly estimated to be around 25,000 kilograms.

“The rough figures itself show that the Corporation will earn a daily revenue of a minimum of `75,000 if this plan comes into to play. We hope that the civic body will be able to garner an additional revenue of `25 lakh every month buy levying user fee,” said Kochi Corporation Health Standing Committee chairman T K Ashraf.

The Corporation is planning to roll out the system by May second week. When asked whether it will increase the financial burden of the hoteliers, Ashraf said that the decision was taken after holding discussions with the office bearers of Hotels and Restaurants Association.

“The hoteliers are illegally engaging private lorries at exorbitant rates to remove the waste generated at their hotels. So,the amount that we will be charging is not a big one for them. Moreover, the new mechanism will help them to assure that the waste is being collected systematically and regularly,” Ashraf added.

He said that the workers will be provided with special boxes, similar to small containers, which will help them to assess the quantity of waste collected. The special vehicles of the Corporation will be used for the purpose. The civic body will be able to track the vehicles with the help of the new mechanism attached to it so as to make sure that the waste is collected from all parts of the City. However, the waste from the outlets that refuse to pay for the system will not be removed by the civic body. The Corporation authorities will also be directing the units like marriage halls, which generate large quantities of waste,to treat it at the source itself.
