KOCHI:A hartal call by the Merchants Welfare Association in Jew Town on Tuesday has upset the plans of tour conductors. The Jew Town Merchants Welfare Association, however, said the strike would be a silent protest. “Shops in the area will remain closed during the day, and the hartal will not affect tourism-related activities. We are protesting against tour operators and guides who do not allow tourists to shop in Jew Town, and instead take them to shops outside the town, after taking commission. We had taken up the issue with the authorities concerned many times, but without any result. On such a day, when tourists are arriving in large numbers, we will suffer loss by closing the shops. But, we want to use the occasion to highlight the issue,” said Association president Aneesh.
