New Corporation Council to Focus on Basic Issues, e-governance

KOCHI: Implementation of the e-governance project will help bring in more transparency in administrative activities of the civic body, while reducing corruption, said Kochi Mayor Soumini Jain. Talking to mediapersons here on Friday, a day after assuming office, Soumini said once the e-Governance project is completed, all the documents of the Corporation would be available online - one of the top priorities of the Council lead by the new Mayor.

“Our primary agenda is to sort out the basic issues facing the city. Firstly, efforts will be made to make Kochi a ‘water-logging free city’. A Masterplan will be prepared for betterment of the drainage system. The proposal mainly aims at deepening, cleaning and reconstructing all the major canals in the city. This will help in curbing water-logging, which is one of the main problems facing the city,” she said, adding that the council would bring in more women-friendly projects so as to ensure their safety and security.

In addition, more public toilets will be constructed, which is something the city needs desperately. We will identify areas in the city where there are no public toilets, and take steps to construct toilets there,” she added.

The Mayor said the Corporation would submit a detailed report before the Central Government on projects that would be carried out by mid-December, under the ‘100 Smart City’ project.
