'Kochi Taxi' to Counter Ola, Uber

KOCHI: It was after considering the fact that the flourishing new gen taxi services will become a threat to the very existence of conventional ones that the Vytilla Car Drivers Welfare Society decided to get on the new gen bandwagon. The decision to shift to the operating procedure like that of Uber and Ola was taken in October and the society is of the opinion that it is nearing completion.

“To project equip the taxis registered with us to meet the challenges possessed by Uber and Ola is nearing completion. By mid-December we will be able to launch our services. For the same, an app and website, named ‘Kochi Taxi’, will be launched. I don’t know whether we can call it as a counter to the taxi service providers, who work in an extensive basis. In our case we will provide service to any place in accordance with the tariff rate fixed by the government,” said D Manikuttan, secretary, Vytilla Car Drivers Welfare Society.

According to him in the first phase 1,000 taxis under it will be provided with gadgets and the financial support for the same will be provided through loans sanctioned by the society. When asked about the formation of a union by new gen taxi providers, Manikuttan said that they were not against the services they were providing but were opposing the flouting of existing tariff rates fixed by the government. “Their one and only aim is to wreck the existing system and thereby capture the market. We demand government intervention in this matter,” adds Manikuttan.
