EC: closure of border partial

KOCHI: The Central Election Commission (EC) on Friday submitted before the Kerala High Court that people who wish to cross State borders for genuine reasons have been allowed to do so after verifying their identity, though the borders have been sealed in connection with the Assembly election.

“Sealing the border does not mean total closure. The decision to impose restrictions on cross-border travel was taken to ensure  free and fair electioneering. The decision does not infringe on any of the fundamental rights of the people,” submitted counsel for the EC Murali Purushothaman. The submission was made in response to a petition filed by Kannan Kamaraj, seeking a directive to allow passage of people and movement of vehicles through all check-posts in the Idukki district on the poll day.
