Kochi Metro police station gets green light

KOCHI: The Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday granted nod for setting up a dedicated police station for Kochi Metro. It was following a proposal from Kochi Metro Rail Ltd(KMRL)in this regard which cleared the decks for the police station to be headed by a Circle Inspector.  
“KMRL has already identified land and started  work on the police station,” according to the government.
Meanwhile, a KMRL spokesperson told Express 90 per cent of the construction work on the police station has been completed. The 3,000 sq ft station is situated at the back of Metro’s Cusat station. Besides the CI, the station will have three sub-inspectors and 26 police personnel of which 10 will be women.

“As per our proposal, the Metro police station will have jurisdiction over the entire Kochi Metro corridor from Aluva to Tripunithura-Petta, Metro stations and the coach depot at Muttom. The area of jurisdiction will be increased as per the extension plans of Kochi Metro. The increase in staff strength and other administrative decisions on the basis of  expansion will be taken by the government,” the spokesperson said.

The police personnel will be appointed on special deputation and will be known as Kochi Metro Special police. “In addition to law and order maintenance, the Special police will be trained in customer handling. Hence, special training will be given to the team based on a module similar to airport training,” the spokesperson said. The date of the station’s inauguration will be finalised after discussions between KMRL and  government.
