794 people arrested for drink driving during special inspection

As many as 794 persons were arrested for drink driving during a special drive conducted by the police within the limits of Kochi Range on Sunday.

KOCHI: As many as 794 persons were arrested for drink driving during a special drive conducted by the police within the limits of Kochi Range on Sunday.

The operation from 5 pm on Saturday till 5 am on Sunday - meant to check the rising number of anti-social activities in the region- was carried out on the orders of  IG(Kochi Range) P Vijayan.

Also,  59 cases were registered and 57 persons apprehended for the sale of narcotic substances. Another 518 cases were registered for rash and negligent driving and causing public nuisance under the influence of alcohol while some 33 persons were booked under the Gaming Act for illegal gambling.

Further, 189 cases were registered against 205 persons for drinking in public and 5,685 persons were booked for various offences under the Motor Vehicles Act.

As part of the drive, some 486 persons against whom non-bailable warrants were pending, including 42 persons wanted  for serious crimes, were produced before the court.

Search operations for weapons and drugs were carried out across 264 locations in the region, with 508 habitual offenders and 230 former drug peddlers’ activities being examined.
Besides, 721 persons listed as part of Operation Goonda and 63 others suspected to have links with religious fundamentalists were subjected to checks.

About 509 lodges were inspected and 309 long-haul vehicles were  inspected. The drivers of 346 inter-state luxury buses were also subjected to breathalyser test.
