KOCHI: The CBI Court in Kochi sentenced a retired BSNL officer to three years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Wednesday for amassing wealth disproportionate to his known source of income.

Former BSNL sub divisional engineer (cables) Earnest Aruja of Correya Road, Pachalam, was given three years rigorous imprisonment and slapped with a fine of Rs 25,000 each under Sections 409, 467 and 471 of the IPC. He was also sentenced to 1 year rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 25,000 under Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. It is a concurrent sentence. Earnest was granted bail as the sentence was only up to three years. The accused may challenge the verdict in a higher court within a year. Though the case was registered in 2005, the trial began only last year.
