KOCHI: Ever since the Metro work began at Kaloor Junction nearly four years ago, the autorickshaw stand functioning in front of the Kaloor Metro Station had been shifted to Kaloor- Kadavanthra Road in order to provide sufficient space for the pedestrians and thereby avoid accidents in the area. But now the situation is back to square one with the auto drivers using the station premises as the auto stand. Even though the shop owners and the local residents complained about it, the city police and the people’s representatives have turned a blind eye.

Around 20 metres away from the Kaloor Metro Station is an authorised autorickshaw stand.“This prevents the pedestrians from using the stretch. Even the private vehicles too stop entering the stretch owing to lack of space,” said Kunjumon, an elderly commuter.

Since the autos are being parked perpendicular to the road, the width of the walkway has been reduced, forcing the pedestrians to use the main road. “Based on the intervention of the police an old stand was shifted to KK Road. Even though we informed the pathetic situation to the police, they are taking no efforts to stop the illegal parking,” said a resident.

However, the autorickshaw workers are of the opinion they are using the space with the permission of the police. “Earlier, the police had objected to parking our vehicle in front of the Kaloor Metro Station but gradually they too agreed to it. Though it is an illegal auto stand nobody is asking us to move from here,” said Dineshan, an auto driver.

However, the Traffic Police said no such auto stand is functioning in front of the Kaloor station. “We will check if the auto drivers have used the space for parking,” said a police officer.
