KOCHI: Cochin Janakeeya Samithi will hold a dharna outside the Kochi Corporation office on October 29 to protest the alleged looting in the name of waste collection and disposal. A user fee is collected from people for collecting waste which is allegedly not followed in four wards from 2 to 5.

“Waste disposal is the duty of the local self government bodies. However, they have now handed over their duties to other agencies and claims to have no hand in ensuring the waste is disposed off properly,” said V Y Nazar, Samara Samithi chairman.

“The Corporation spends Rs 25 crore on cleaning staff in the 28 divisions of circles from 1 to 10. We need to know what these staff are doing when the waste collection is done by agencies. We did not get any clear answers from the Corporation and we want to know on what basis this fee is charged,” he added.
