Kochi: Training programme on mariculture begins

The training programme will provide exposure to important aspects of genetics and genomics that are relevant to marine biology and fisheries.

KOCHI: A 10-day training programme on the prospects of genetics and genomics in fisheries resource management, conservation and mariculture got under way at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) on Wednesday.

Teachers and researchers from various universities and ICAR research institutes across the country are participating in the training programme organised by the Marine Biotechnology division of the CMFRI. 

The training programme will provide exposure to important aspects of genetics and genomics that are relevant to marine biology and fisheries, including population genetics, population genomics, eDNA based estimation of marine biodiversity and next-generation sequencing methods.

In  addition, sessions on challenges in mariculture, overview of the marine fisheries resource management,  impact of plastic pollution in the ocean, effect of climate change on marine fisheries and evolution of teleost fish will be held.
