The incident took place at around 11 am, but since commuters noticed it, a major tragedy was averted.

According to experts, the road caved in because of water seeping into the metro pillar. “During the flood, water may have seeped into the pillar and resulted in displacing the sand and mud under it,” said an engineer.

The technical wing of the Kochi Metro also reached the spot to analyse the damage. “The metro pillar has not been affected, there is no cause for worry,” said a source with the KMRL. The National Highway Authority dug out the caved in the portion and filled it with concrete.
