MUMBAI: A massive search operation has been undertaken by the fire brigade, Mumbai police and the disaster management agency to search Dr. Deepak Amarapurkar, who has gone missing since Tuesday evening.

The search operation is being carried out in the Elphinstone, Parel, Dadar and nearby area of central Mumbai.

“Every manhole is being searched as Dr. Amrapurkar was last seen near a manhole at Elphinstone bridge. Some locals have said that they have seen someone being swept away in the manhole last evening,” said fire-brigade chief Prabhat Rahangadale.

Dr Amrapurkar, a senior gastroenterologist of the Bombay Hospital, had asked his driver to drop him near his home at Elphinstone road.

The area was under waist-deep water when he told the driver to drop him near the bridge, said officials at the N M Joshi police station, where relatives of Dr Amrapurkar have registered a missing person’s complaint.

The police said that an umbrella similar to that of Dr Amrapurkar was found near the manhole from where he was last seen. However, they declined to confirm whether Dr Amrapurkar fell in the open manhole.
