THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A group of elderly women in the city have come together to redefine the concept of life in the old age. Through their venture, titled ‘The Creative Minds’, these women have found a platform to develop and showcase their talents.
Various show pieces handcrafted by the members, including traditional and modern paintings, glass work, ribbon work, hand-made jewellery, bridal bouquets and garlands, will be on display at the five-day exhibition that will open on Wednesday.
The motley group, which has women from all walks of life, was formed when these senior students trickled in one by one into ‘Flora’, the art and craft teaching centre run by George Fernandez at Oottukuzhy Junction in the city. Later, the group registered as a society, under the initiative of R Shantha, one of the senior members and the owner of Kamini Dress Designers. The group has functioned as a support system for many women who were finding it hard to cope with the loneliness of old age. The proceeds from the exhibition will go towards the welfare activities for women in similar circumstances.
Poet Sugathakumari will inaugurate the exhibition at the Kamini showroom, Vazhuthacaud, on Wednesday at 3 pm. For details, contact - 0471- 2335607.
