The Illusion: Jazz it up

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For lovers of jazz music, ‘The Illusion’ has been a breath of fresh air. The five-member band, which has been creating ripples in the pop scene with their scintillating music, were well received as guest performers with Jus’ Jamm early in February in Kochi. Carl Frenais, the lead vocalist and guitarist of the band based says, “It was in 2010, when SOTO, a Latin American rock band came to Kerala and we joined them. We were just three members at that time.” The band was euphoric when they landed in Kochi again for a performance on Wednesday.

What sets the ‘The Illusion’ band apart from the  rest?  “Ours is the only contemporary pop band here in Kerala. Contemporary pop music is different from the rest, as we play comparatively complex versions of music which is a potpourri of jazz, rap, soul and many other genres. What makes us different is that we experiment with our music.”

The band has already performed at numerous venues across the country and abroad including Dubai, Mumbai and Mangalore. Carl says that though the audience in Kerala are not much accustomed to contemporary pop music, he is confident about the reception. “We performed to a packed house everywhere. Our target audience are kids and youngsters.”

The five-member band consists of Carl Frenais, the lead vocalist and guitarist, Bayden Austin, the bass guitarist, Jacob Jose, the drummer, Alice Van Almsick, the violinist and Brady Britto, the keyboardist.
